On September 21st, 2018 the Cottage Hospital Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation (CRHF) sponsored its annual Empowerment Series at the Lobero Theatre. Each year CRHF select a prominent speaker in the area of rehabilitation medicine to speak on various topics. This year, Rod Lathim was asked to produce the event with the focus of thetransformational power of the arts. Instead of a speaker, he suggested bringing back the cast of STORM READING, as it was one of the best examples of transformational art he could imagine.
“Celebrating Storm Reading” was hosted by Honorary Board Member Anthony Edwards, who directed and co-produced the award-winning documentary film SPEAKING THROUGH WALLS (available in these archives) on Access Theatre and the tour of STORM READING. Featured onstage were Neil Marcus, Matthew Ingersoll and Katie Voice – the cast of STORM READING, and director/producer Rod Lathim, marking the 30th Anniversary of the production that began at the Lobero, returned several times and was ultimately filmed for television at the Lobero Theatre in 1996. (The film received a Media Access Award and is still used today in disability culture classes across the USA.) The filmed version is available in these archives as well.
Selected scenes from the play were staged and scenes from the 1996 filmed version werescreened, along with clips from SPEAKING THROUGH WALLS. It was a warm and wonderful gathering of Access Theatre Family – artists, staff, board members, volunteers and area fans of Access Theatre cheered the reunion and the powerful impact of Access Theatre’s longest running show.
